The word "marquee" has it's origins within the British armed forces of 1690 and, as with much of the English language, is heavily influenced by the French who invaded our land during these times. Originally the word represented a linen canopy which would be thrown over a tent to identify it as being the location of the the marquis. The marquis was one rank down from the Duke and it was his duty to guard the frontiers of the kingdom.
